First Nine at Tower Ranch Set to Open

On May 30 members can play the first nine holes of the new Thomas McBroom-designed golf course at the Club at Tower Ranch in Kelowna, B.C. The clubhouse dining area, Aberdeen's Restaurant and Lounge, will also open its doors that day to members and the general public.

Sorenstam Set to Design Course in British Columbia
|

Annika Sorenstam will team up with Canadian golf architect Thomas McBroom to co-design her fourth international course. The project is planned for Red Mountain Resort in Rossland, one of Western Canada and British Columbia's oldest ski resorts. To be named the Golf Club at Red Mountain, work will begin in spring 2009 on the 7,071-yard, par-71 track.

Harper Wins PNGA Men's Mid-Am

Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, B.C. rolled in his final birdie putt on the 18th hole to go 8-under and become the winner of the 23rd PNGA Men's Mid-Amateur Championship. The event was played at the 6,780-yard, par-72 Big Sky Golf & Country Club in Pemberton, B.C. Erik Hanson of Kirkland, Wash., sank his 10-foot birdie attempt on the finishing hole to go 6-under and finish alone as the runner-up.

I always heard of Moe Norman and his great ability to hit a golf ball but never had a chance to read a good account of his life. Anecdotes about Norman are legendary: He hit 800-1,000 practice balls a day; struck 1,500 perfectly straight drives in one day; had hitting four to six pins in a round of golf as a goal; and to try and set a course record the first time he played a course.

Cook Named President of Royal Canadian Golf Association

Andrew Cook of Toronto was inducted as the 105th president of the RCGA during the National Sport Organization's (NSO) Annual General Meeting held this weekend in Toronto. Cook succeeds 2007 president Garry West of Toronto, while Tom McCarthy of Hammonds Plains, N.S. becomes First Vice-President and Kamloops, B.C. native Jack MacDonald assumes the role of Second Vice-President.

Canadian Tour Honors Handed Out

The Canadian Tour has named California's Byron Smith as its Rolex Player of the Year. Smith, 26, captured two events and had five top-10 finishes in just 12 starts to lead the Canadian Tour Order of Merit, earning $91,202.

The Canada Games Council (CGC) has announced the final sports selected for the 2013 Canada Summer Games, to be hosted in Quebec. Official notice was received by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) last week that golf was selected as an official sport of the Canada Games.

Superintendent has Royal Montreal Ready for Presidents Cup

A 22-year Class A member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) will be welcoming world's top golfers to Royal Montreal Golf Club September 27-30 for the Presidents Cup. Blake McMaster, the historic club's course and property manager, has been preparing for the event for years.
