Titleist's Fastback & SquareBack Putters - ReviewPutters, you got to love’m!They are one of the few golf clubs whose size and shape change constantly, morphing from one style to another, from season to season. A club that one day can be your savior, the next day can be your ugly stick! But in some cases, a putter can be more than just a putter; it can be a thing of beauty. A hand milled piece of art. A club that is treated with love and admiration, cared for almost like a member of the family. If you think I'm crazy, try and Google the name "Scotty Cameron" and see for yourself the passion one can have for a putter! Scotty Cameron has been designing putters since the late 1980s for companies like Ray Cook, Maxfli and Mizuno, but it wasn’t until 1994, when he partnered with Titleist Golf to design and market some of the most successful putters on the PGA tour. Since 1993, more than 500 worldwide tournaments and nearly 50% of the 4 Golf Majors were won using a Scotty Cameron putter. Players like Phil Mickelson, Mike Wier and David Toms have won majors using various models Cameron putters. Tiger Woods has used a Cameron putter in each of his 14 majors. What is the fascination with these luxurious flat sticks? Are they that much better than your everyday Ping or Odyssey putter? Some would debate that. I mean they are works of hand crafted beauty. The balance and feel of an average Cameron model is unparalleled in my opinion, but critics knock several of Scotty’s 'unoriginal' designs. Scotty has borrowed designs from some of the most recognized models in putter history (8802, Anser, B60). Ask Ping what they think of Scotty's originality and they will quickly say, "Oh, you mean Copy Cameron?" Titleist just recently added two new unique models to their Studio Select line, the Fastback & Squareback. The two are mallet variations of their popular Newport blade but are stubbier looking than their usual offerings, which is uncharacteristic for a Cameron putter. But I do admit that once you get one in your hands, you will realize why these putters retail for $300. While a lot of golfers will bypass the Cameron putters due to their higher than average price, demoing one might just change their minds - I guess you could say that 'Proof is in the putting'. |
