Work Finishing up on New Clubhouse at Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course in Laredo
The new clubhouse at the Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course - nicknamed the Max - is nearing completion. A grand-opening celebration is planned on August 28 to unveil the new structure.
In addition to city and course-affiliated dignitaries, attending the ceremony will be Hall of Fame golfer Nancy Lopez. The event is slated to begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:00 a.m., followed by a putting clinic on the 18th green with Lopez and local junior golfers, and then a charity benefit tournament at 11:00 a.m.
The 9,000-square-foot hacienda-style clubhouse was designed by Metaform Studio Architects of Laredo. Headed by the team of Ricardo Solis and Eduardo Quiroga, the building is situated on the banks of the Rio Grande and affords spectacular views of several holes.
The clubhouse includes a golf pro shop, full-service bar, the Las Islitas restaurant, and a second-level banquet facility with a terrace and balcony. The interior design firm is Laredo's William Moritz Luft, one of the developers involved in restoring historic buildings in downtown Laredo.
"This is the next big thing with The Max. We are planning a memorable event with Nancy Lopez to dedicate our new clubhouse," said Horacio De Leon, Laredo's assistant city manager. "A reception, a ribbon-cutting and a golf tournament will mark the final chapter of all construction and we will be a full-service facility moving forward. The golf clubhouse will be a perfect venue for not only servicing our golf clientele, but also for hosting special events, dinners and parties."
The Robert Trent Jones II Signature Design, par-72 course occupies 270 acres alongside the Rio Grande. It offers five sets of tees, with yardages ranging from 7,069 from the back tees to 4,759 at the forward tees. A provision has been made for competitive tournament tees to be extended to 7,297 yards, and a dedicated "juniors" teeing area on each hole is incorporated for family play. Learning clinics also are being held and actively promoted at the Max to introduce golf to local residents.
