Woods Already Favored to Win Masters
Even though he hasn't played a competitive round of golf since last November, Tiger Woods has been installed as the odds-on favorite to win the 2010 Masters. Earlier Tuesday, Woods announced that his first tournament in four months will also be the first major championship of the year.
British bookmakers William Hill have made Woods a 4-1 favorite to take home the green jacket at the Masters, while giving him 25-1 odds of winning the Grand Slam, emblematic of the champion in one year of all four major golf titles.
After Woods, William Hill gave 6-1 odds that Phil Mickelson would win the Masters, while Irishman Padraig Harrington was pegged at 16-1.
Woods, 34, has won 14 major titles, four shy of the all-time record set by Jack Nicklaus. Woods' chances to win the Grand Slam are abetted by the fact that three of this year's majors are on courses where Woods has already won majors.
He's had four victories at Augusta National Golf Club, site of the Masters, and Woods won at Pebble Beach, where the U.S. Open will be played in June. He's also had an outstanding track record at St. Andrews, site of July's British Open, winning the 2000 Open Championship by eight strokes.
That same year he won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach by an amazing 15 strokes. Finishing at 12-under par 272, he also became the first player in the 106-year history of the U.S. Open to finish double-digits under par.
"All the major courses are Tiger's favorites, so despite a terrible beginning we think that 2010 will end up being terrific for Tiger," William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said in a statement.
