Wild Rock to Open Soon in Wisconsin
Wild Rock Golf Club, the latest creation of the golf architect team Hurdzan & Fry, is set to open May 1. The course in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., blends three different landscapes into a challenging round of golf. From a woodland area featuring a boulder stream to the Dells' famous sandstone ridges combined with the rocky mounds of former quarry, Wild Rock should spur talk among golf enthusiasts.
According to Dr. Mike Hurdzan, co-designer of Wild Rock, "Wild Rock is guaranteed to be one of the premier courses in Wisconsin and one of the top ten courses I have ever built."
Wild Rock fits into its setting with a strategic layout featuring extreme elevation changes and scenic views. The first holes wind through cropland and woodlands split by a large natural ravine featuring a stream with waterfalls and pools. Golfers then head into a wooded ridgeline where the land falls to the east, leaving vistas of up to 30 miles away.
"These holes were easy to envision," Hurdzan adds. "Nature left us with such a beautiful area that creating hole after hole of truly wonderful golf was easy."
Wild Rock also offers rugged weathered bunkers around greens and alongside fairways. Several closing holes are in an area that used to be an old stone quarry, and sand and gravel mounds line several fairways. Chris Goodwick, Director of Golf at Wild Rock, comments: "The final par-3 will be one of the most breathtaking and dramatic par-3s golfers will ever play. Six tees dot a ridge leaving the golfer with a precise shot over the quarry to a green lying on the edge of its remains.
"This course is great for the true golfer as well as the resort golfer," adds Goodwick. "Because this course has five sets of tees, it provides all golfers with a comfortable challenge. It will definitely leave you feeling great about the game of golf and wanting to challenge the course again and again."
Wild Rock will feature electric golf carts equipped with GPS systems, which allow players to trace their distance to the pin, receive pro tips for tough shots, input scores electronically, keep pace of other scores during tournaments, see other carts on the course, order food and beverage from the clubhouse, and receive weather warnings.
Wild Rock is part of the Wilderness Territory in Wisconsin Dells, home to the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort, Glacier Canyon Lodge, and Wilderness on the Lake. Wilderness Territory offers guest rooms, cabins, vacation villas and condominiums. Guests have access to seven indoor and outdoor water parks with slides and lap pools. The Wilderness Territory also boasts the Sundara Spa, Sarento's Italian Restaurant, Fields Premier Steakhouse and other eateries.
Fees at Wild Rock will range from $65 to $105 depending on the time of season and day; all guests of Wilderness Territory will receive a discount on green fees. Golf rates include use of practice facility, cart rental, GPS System and 18 holes. For more information or a tee time, call 608/253.4653 or visit www.wildrockgolf.com.
