Weekley & Snedeker win Skills Challenge
Boo Weekley and Brandt Snedeker teamed up to win the 18th annual ADT Skills Challenge Monday at the Breakers resort in Palm Beach, Fla. They pocketed $157,000 each, defeating the teams of Kenny Perry/J.B. Holmes, Fred Couples/Hunter Mahan and Fred Funk/Nick Price.
Weekley and Snedeker won three of the first six skills and clinched the title by knocking off Perry and Holmes on the "ADT Reverse Scramble" playoff hole, which was worth $200,000. The unusual format allows the opposing team to select which shot its rivals must play, adding pressure to each swing of the club.
"We brother-in-lawed it pretty well," offered Weekley, who handpicked Snedeker as his partner for the one-day, $800,000 Tour-sanctioned event. "We know each other really well and that was important. The 'Reverse Scramble' is tough."
"The 'Reverse Scramble' is a terrific format," added Snedeker. "But if you don't hit a good shot, you let yourself down and you really let your partner down, because then he has to deal with it. It's funny, because this way, playing the worse shot, it's like we're handicap golfers again."
Perry and Holmes won the opening skill, the Long Drive, behind Holmes' blast of 314 yards. Funk/Price won the Mid Iron and then Weekley and Snedeker took control, winning the Bunker Shot, Chip Shot and Trouble Shot. Funk also won the Short Iron skill before the teams lined up for the "Reverse Scramble" and its $200,000 in weighted prize money.
Perry and Holmes finished second with $191,000, with Funk/Price third ($155,000) and Mahan/Couples fourth ($140,000).
