Weaver Wins British Amateur

Drew Weaver, a student at Virginia Tech, became the first American to win the British Amateur since 1979. He dedicated his victory on June 23 to the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre.

The 20-year-old junior defeated Australia's Tim Stewart 2 and 1 in his first appearance in the tournament, held at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in northern England.

The victory earned the Hokie golfer two prestigious invitations. Weaver earned his way into the British Open at Carnoustie in Scotland from July 19-22 and an invitation to the 2008 Masters Tournament.

"This win is for the people we lost on April 16," he said. "I've been proud to represent the college here this week and to give (the students) something positive."

In the worst mass shooting in modern American history, Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people before committing suicide on the campus of Virginia Tech.
