Walker One Up in Wyndham Championship
Jimmy Walker fired an 8-under 62 to take the halfway lead in the Wyndham Championship. The $5.2 million PGA Tour event began Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
Walker carded four birdies on the front nine and four more on the back to reach 12-under 128, one stroke ahead of defending champion Webb Simpson, who posted a 63. "I started off just, you know, wanted to hit a bunch of fairways and stuff today and I did . . . It was a solid day, lot of fairways."
Simpson, who's also the reigning U.S. Open champion, was pleased with his play. "I made a couple more putts today which was probably the only difference," said the North Carolina native. "To play a round on a golf course this tricky without a bogey is always a good thing."
Four players are tied for third at 10-under 130. They include Sergio Garcia (63), Harris English (64), and two former teammates at North Carolina State, Tim Clark (67) and first-round leader Carl Pettersson, who followed up his opening 62 with a 68.
"I didn't have much game at all today, really," said Pettersson, who cracked the head on his driver on the 17th hole in the first round and used a replacement Friday. "I was pretty tired. My swing wasn't feeling great. I felt, overall, 68 was great, actually."
