Villegas & Watson Win CVS Caremark Charity Classic
Torrential rains couldn't stop the 2008 CVS Caremark Charity Classic in Barrington, R.I. Ten two-person teams each completed 28 holes during the two-day tournament before the storms rolled in. After a three-and-a-half hour rain delay, a playoff began with the four teams tied for the lead.
All tied at 15-under-par were the teams of Billy Andrade and Davis Love III, Bubba Watson and Camilo Villegas, Paul Goydos and Tim Herron and Rocco Mediate and Brandt Snedeker.
After a three-hole playoff, first-round leaders Watson and Villegas emerged as the 2008 CVS Caremark Charity Classic champions. Villegas made the winning birdie for his team on the 17th hole.
"It's all about charity," said Watson, who donated $10,000 of his winning check back to the tournament. "I know it helps Rhode Island a lot."
Tournament co-host Andrade was excited that his son caddied for Watson and surprised at the job he did for a player on the winning team. "I didn't know he could even read the greens," Andrade said.
No Energizer Skins were awarded Tuesday, allowing Monday's skins-winning team of Andrade and Love to take home the entire $50,000. On Monday Love also won the Neutrogena Suncare Long Drive title as well, with a 315-yard blast on No. 15.
