U.S. Women’s Open Coming to Pinehurst

The 2001 U.S. Women’s Open will be played at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina on May 28-June 3. The championship is expected to bring thousands of fans to the area. Besides enjoying one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport, visitors should take advantage of the 40-plus golf courses in the area.

The Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) of the Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen Area is the information source for determining where to play golf or stay overnight, and find out about non-golf activities. “Spectators coming to the area for the Women’s Open will find a wide variety of things to do; first and foremost, they can play a round of golf while they’re here,” said Caleb Miles, Executive Director/CEO for CVB. “They’ll find a great selection of golf courses (designed by such luminaries as) Donald Ross, Tom Fazio, Dan Maples and Mike Stranz.”

Visitors can find out about the area a variety of ways, including:

· Information can be faxed to callers via the CVB’s phone system and following step-by-step instructions.

· The CVB’s website, www.homeofgolf.com, has listings of accommodations along with updated availability and online booking.

· The bureau’s Destination & Golf Guide offers information on accommodations, golf courses, dining, and other local attractions. This official guide is available by request at no charge.

With such a wealth of local courses, it’s not surprising the CVB is gearing up for the expected boom in tourists in late May. “We encourage visitors to bring their clubs when they come to the Women’s Open,” said Miles. “No, they won’t be able to play in the championship themselves, but they’ll be able to play on other excellent area courses. They’ll be assured a wonderful experience . . . no matter what their final score is.”
