Uihlein Takes 54-Hole Lead in Sahalee Players Championship

Peter Uihlein of Orlando, Fla., a junior on the Oklahoma State University golf team, fired a 6-under par 66 in the third round to secure a two-shot lead over Andrew Putnam of University Place, Wash., heading into the final round of the 17th Sahalee Players Championship. The event is being held at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.

Uihlein's bogey-free round include six birdies to go with 12 pars. He sits at 13-under par 203 overall.

After being a member of last year's victorious U.S.A. Walker Cup Team, Uihlein has built an impressive resume for the 2011 team. Since then he has won the Dixie Amateur, finished fourth at the Copa de Las Americas, medalist at the NCAA Regional, second at the NCAA Championship, and seventh at the Sunnehanna Amateur. Uihlein, who is playing in his first Sahalee Players Championship, is looking to become the second Oklahoma State Cowboy to win the championship in the past three years, seeking to join former teammate Trent Whitekiller, who won in 2008.

Putnam, the 36-hole leader, used another solid round of 3-under par 69. Putnam is riding high off after qualifying for the U.S. Open just a few weeks ago. He's five shots ahead of 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash., 2007 U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up Dan Whitaker of Cle Elum, Wash., Nick Ellis of East Wenatchee, Wash., and Bryan Martin of Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Defending champion Nick Taylor, a recent graduate of the University of Washington and the 2010 Hogan Award winner, is 10 shots back of Uihlein heading into the final round.

Friday's final pairing of Uihlein, Putnam and Whitaker will tee off at 11:20 a.m.

Some notable past champions in the 17 years of the championship have included Whitekiller, Daniel Summerhays, Kyle Stanley, Ryan Moore, Arron Oberholser, Jason Gore, and Casey Martin. The 7,403-yard, par-72 Home Course is holding this year's championship because Sahalee Country Club is preparing for the U.S. Senior Open, which starts later in July. The Home Course will be the Assisting Course for the 2010 U.S. Amateur in August at Chambers Bay in Tacoma.
