Tseng & Hull Top Women's British Open
Taiwan's Yani Tseng and Australia's Katherine Hull carded 4-under 68s to share the first-round lead in the Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale. Both players were propelled to their scores by eagles on the final hole.
The two lead South Koreans Yang Amy and Yoo Sun Young, American Brittany Lincicome and France's Anne-Lise Caudal by a stroke. Another South Korean, Sun Young Yoo, and American Michelle Wie carded 70s and are tied for seventh.
Juli Inkster is among a group of seven players, including world No. 1 Shin Jiyai, tied for ninth after 71s on the historic course in Southport, England.
Tseng is hoping her fine play continues; it certainly doesn't hurt that she enjoys the venue. "I just love it here," said the 22-year-old two-time major winner said. "I wish we played courses like this every week. It makes you think and keeps you focused."
Lincicome got off to a rugged start with a double-bogey and a bogey. But the 24-year-old from Florida righted the ship thanks to her prodigious length off the tee, which should be an advantage in this week's major. "It is a huge advantage," Lincicome said of her driving ability. "Today I hit it so well and also holed some really long putts."
Wie, who opened with a bogey, also eagled the par-5 18th hole. "It was a good day," Wie said. "I bogeyed the first but stayed patient and had lots of birdie chances. The finish was great."
