Trump to Operate New Ferry Point Course in New York City

The city of New York has selected Donald Trump to run the new course that has long been under construction at Ferry Point Park in the Bronx. The announcement was made Friday.

The Trump Organization, which currently owns and operates nine courses in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and has a new links layout underway near Aberdeen in Scotland, will invest $10 million in the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature venue at Ferry Point.

Trump signed a 20-year license agreement to oversee and complete the Big Apple project and operate the facility when it's completed, which could happen by spring 2014.

The Ferry Point project, now in the works for 14 years, has been plagued by cost overruns and various missteps. The city took over construction in 2008 after the previous developer left.

Originally expected to cost $57 million, the price tag has since risen to $97 million, according to a Parks Department spokesman. Trump will handle the design and construction of a clubhouse at the site, which is situated near the Whitestone Bridge and affords vistas of the Manhattan skyline.

"This is an opportunity to have one of our country's greatest golf courses right smack in the middle of New York City - an unheard-of opportunity," said Trump.

"This new public golf course will be a great amenity for the Bronx, for the city and for visitors," added Parks Department Commissioner Adrian Benepe.
