Three Share Lead in Toshiba Classic
Bobby Clampett, Olin Browne and Bernhard Langer all opened with 6-under 65s to take a share of the first-round lead in the Toshiba Classic. The 54-hole, $1.75 million Champions Tour event began Friday at Newport Beach Country Club in Southern California.
Clampett had eight birdies and a pair of bogeys, while Browne, the 2011 U.S. Senior Open champion, posted six birdies. Langer, a World Golf Hall of Fame member, also had a nice day with four birdies and an eagle on the par-4 sixth hole.
Tied for fourth after 66s are Steve Pate, Bill Glasson, David Eger, Loren Roberts and Tom Kite.
CBS golf reporter Gary McCord was among a big group that also included 2010 Toshiba Classic winner Fred Couples, shooting 67s.
Defending champion Nick Price of Zimbabwe carded a 1-under 70 to start the tournament.
