Three Share Lead in Mayakoba Golf Classic
Will Claxton followed up his first-round 66 with a 68 Friday to drop into a share of first with England's Greg Owen and Daniel Summerhays. Owen carded his second straight 67, while Summerhays posted the low round of the day, a 6-under 65, in the $3.7 million event, which began Thursday at the El Cameleon course in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
The threesome is tied at 8-under 134, one stroke ahead of Chris Stroud, who had a 66. Sweden's Richard S. Johnson (66), Australia's Robert Allenby (67) and American Kevin Stadler are tied for fifth at 6-under 136.
For the second straight day, wind factored into the scores. "For me, yesterday afternoon and this morning conditions were similar," said Claxton. "Probably the wind was a little gustier today, but I've just kind of had good control over my ball, certainly had a couple of good breaks here and there and putted the ball well, just doing all the things you do when you're playing well."
Owen feels he's pretty well adapted to blustery conditions. "It's been blowing the same all day, even at 6:00 this morning in the dark it was still howling, so it's a little tougher than yesterday, I thought, but you know, it's fair out there," noted Owen, who turned 40 last Sunday.
"It's not like the balls are moving on the green or anything, so you just gotta play well and adapt."
Johnson is pleased with how he's striking the ball. "I'm playing really well,' said the Stockholm native, whose only win on the PGA Tour came in the 2008 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee. "I'm hitting the ball on line, and I hit one bad drive today, and that was on this hole here, whatever that was, 6, but got a good lie in the desert and hit it to two feet and made birdie.
"But overall I'm keeping the ball in play really well and hitting it on line, so I'm hitting it close a lot."
Defending champion Johnson Wagner is well down the leaderboard in a tie for 43rd at 1-over 143 after rounds of 73 and 70.
