Swedberg Completes Magical Week

The magical ride of Danvers, Mass. resident Steven Swedberg continued on Thursday as he fired a 1-over-par 72 at the Gardner Municipal Golf Course to become one of 24 qualifiers for the next stage of the U.S. Public Links Championship. The 51-year-old Swedberg, who didn’t begin playing golf until he was 30, completed a week he’ll never forget.

On Monday, Swedberg shot a solid 71 at Brockton’s Thorny Lea Golf Course to earn a spot in the field for next month’s State Amateur Championship. Not satisfied with that accomplishment, Swedberg fired a brilliant 67 the next day at the Donald Ross-designed Plymouth Country Club to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open, which will be played at the venerable Salem Country Club at the end of June.

Swedberg, a UConn graduate and physical therapist by trade, is a relative newcomer to the highly competitive Massachusetts Amateur scene. But he’s made a loud statement with his accomplishments during the past week. New Englanders now have another native son to root for at this year’s Open, along with Rhode Islander, Dana Quigley.
