Stull Wins Senior Oregon Open

Steve Stull earned $7,500 en route to a wire-to-wire victory in the 2001 Barrett Business Services Senior Oregon Open held August 1-3. During the 54-hole event at the par-72 Running Y Ranch in Klamath Falls, Stull fired five eagles and finished at 9-under 201. The Senior Oregon Open may be one of Stull’s last Northwest events. The Tri-Cities, Wash. native has his sights set on the Senior PGA Tour, where he’s already won over $40,000 this year.

The victory was Stull’s first in a Northwest PGA Section event since the 1982 Washington State Open at Oakbrook Golf & Country Club in Tacoma. In that tournament Stull beat such luminaries as future tour pros Rick Fehr, Don Bies and George Lanning, Oakbrook’s then head pro.

In hot pursuit one stroke behind Stull midway through the final round was Jim Wilkinson of Langdon Farms Golf Club near Portland. But Stull calmly knocked in a 3-footer for his fifth and final eagle and coasted home from there. Kene Bensel of Bellingham, Wash. shot a final-round 69 on the 6,546-yard Running Y course to move into a tie with Wilkinson for second, at 210. Each earned $4,500. Rick Weihe of Bellingham finished as the low amateur at 213.
