Stanley Named 2009 Ben Hogan Award Winner

Clemson's Kyle Stanley was named the 2009 Ben Hogan Award winner last Friday night at Colonial Country Club. "Oh gosh, it's fantastic," said the junior from Gig Harbor, Wash. "Just to be here is a special honor. This is overwhelming."

Stanley won in balloting by members of the Hogan committee over Indiana's Jorge Campillo and 2008 winner Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State as the nation's top collegiate golfer.

"Ricky and Jorge are both great players, and I'm not sure one is more deserving than the other," Stanley said. "I'm very thrilled."

Amateur and collegiate players over the previous 12 months are considered by committee members for college golf's player-of-the-year honor. Stanley won one tournament, had five other top-10 finishes, and also won the Southern Amateur and Jones Cup.

"I'd like to think it was my résumé and my consistent play," said Stanley in regard to the committee's selection. "It's an accumulation of a lot of hard work. For me to win this award is very special."

Stanley plans to turn pro after this week's NCAA Division I Championships at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. In accepting the award, he paid tribute to his parents, coaches and golf instructors. "I've been fortunate to have a lot of help from a lot of people along the way," Stanley said.
