Sorenstam Rolls in Michelob Ultra Open

Annika Sorenstam has officially returned to her winning ways. The Swede, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, notched her third victory of the year in the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill. She cruised to a seven-shot victory at the event in Williamsburg, Va., after firing a closing 5-under 66 for a record-setting four-round total of 19-under 265. She earned $330,000.
Sorenstam obliterated the former scoring record of 270 set by Karrie Webb in 2006. The victory was the 72nd of her remarkable career and one she particularly enjoyed. "It was a very special one. I love coming here, I think it's a great golf course. I just haven't done well here in the past," she said. "It means a lot to play well here. They've had great winners here in the past and I wanted to do something special this week."
Sorenstam's victory makes her one of just four winners through 11 events on the LPGA Tour this year. It also puts her within 10 victories of Mickey Wright and 16 behind leader Kathy Whitworth on the Tour's all-time win list.
"I feel great. This season has started very, very well," said Sorenstam, who was hobbled in 2007 by injuries. "It's nice to be back and playing some good golf and feel like I can control the golf ball again. I'm enjoying it very much."
Former Women's British Open champion Jeong Jang was two strokes behind Sorenstam heading into the back nine, but faltered down the stretch en route to a 1-under 70. Jang closed with a bogey; if she had parred the 72nd hole Jang would have given her second place all by herself. Instead, she ended up tied at 12-under-par 272 with Allison Fouch (64), Christina Kim (69) and Karen Stupples (66). The bogey cost Jang over $80,000.
The world's top-ranked female player, Lorena Ochoa, struggled throughout the tournament, closing with a 1-under 70 on Sunday to finish tied for 12th at 7-under. "I was a little frustrated. It was a long week," said the Mexican superstar. "I had trouble with the speed of the greens and they also broke more than I thought. It's time to move on to the next one because it wasn't my week."
Sorenstam is now in position to threaten Ochoa for the top spot in women's golf. "I was very pleased," said Sorenstam of her play this weekend. "This is a tough golf course in these conditions and J.J. (Jang) was playing well. I felt like I had to do something and I felt very comfortable over the ball. Here on the back nine I said, 'Let's just play some golf and see what happens.' It was fun."
