Schulz Gets First Win Since 1991

Ted Schulz closed with a 2-under 70 at Pebble Beach Golf Links to win the Home Care & Hospice First Tee Open.

Schulz's victory in the Champions Tour event was the first on a professional circuit for the 50-year-old Kentuckian since the 1991 Nissan Los Angeles Open. His latest victory was worth $315,000.

"It's huge," Schulz said of the victory. "I played pretty solid most of the day. I didn't hit it as close as yesterday and I figured I would win if I shot 4-under. It turned out, 2-under was enough."

Schulz birdied the par-3 17th to keep a one-stroke margin over his closest pursuer, Tom Pernice Jr., who also birdied the 17th but got a five on the par-5 closing hole, as did Schulz.

Pernice didn't know Schulz birdied the 17th as well, saying later he would have been more aggressive in hopes of making another birdie. "I didn't know Ted had birdied 17 behind me," Pernice said. "I would have played 18 differently. I hit a terrible layup. But I'm happy for Ted - he hasn't been there in a while."

Schulz finished at 14-under 202, with Pernice another stroke back. Tom Kite and first-round leader, Mark Calcavecchia, both shot 69s and finished in a tie for third at 204.

Fred Couples carded a 68 and ended up at 205, one shot better than Russ Cochran, who tied Brad Bryant for the low round of the day, a 65, and Scott Simpson (69).

Defending champion Jeff Sluman couldn't muster up any final-round magic, shooting a 71 to finish at 6-under 210 in a tie for 14th with three others, including Tom Watson, who turned 61 on Saturday.
