Princeville's Makai Undergoing a Remodel |
|
The 27-hole Princeville Makai Golf Course, which opened in 1971 on Kauai's north shore, has begun a multi-million-dollar renovation that will continue until late summer 2009.
The work is being done in conjunction with the renovation of the Princeville Hotel, which shares the same ownership as Makai Golf Course. The hotel recently closed for renovation and will reopen in mid-2009 as the St. Regis Princeville Hotel. During the renovation of the hotel and Makai, Princeville's other course, the 18-hole Prince, will operate as usual.
Makai is made up of three nine-hole sides, extending in spokes from the clubhouse and encompassing 200 acres. Each nine is different: Lakes winds around lakes; Ocean runs along the coastline; and Woods meanders through woodlands and offers mountain views. The initial renovation focuses primarily on Ocean and Lakes, both of which are now closed. Woods will remain open throughout the renovation period, with varying tee and flag settings being utilized for 18-hole play. The green fee for 18 holes on Woods is currently $59.
Robert Trent Jones II, the original architect of Makai, is overseeing the renovation. The work includes: the planting of Seashore Paspalum throughout the course, except for the rough; reconfiguring the greens complexes and surrounds; reshaping bunkers; refurbishing cart paths and rest rooms; and upgrading the practice facility with two large practice tees, a practice fairway bunker, target greens with bunkers, teaching tee, and short-game area. Plans for a new Makai clubhouse will be implemented later this year.
