Price is Right in Toshiba Classic

Nick Price equaled the all-time Champions Tour record Friday in the opening round of the Toshiba Classic. The World Golf Hall of Famer carded an 11-under-par 60 to take a five-stroke lead in the $1.7 million event at Newport Beach Country Club in Southern California.

The Zimbabwe native posted seven birdies and two eagles, the latter scores coming on the par-5 15th and 18th holes.

Price is ahead of reigning Champions Tour Player of the Year Bernard Langer, Mark O'Meara, Mark Wiebe and Brad Bryant.

Defending champion Fred Couples posted a 66 and is tied for sixth with Andy Bean and David Peoples. Six players had 67s.

The only previous players to shoot 60 on the Champions Tour are Tom Purtzer, who did so in the 2004 Toshiba Classic; Isao Aoki (1997 Emerald Coast Classic); Walter Morgan (2002 AT&T Canada Senior Open); Bruce Fleisher (2002 RJR Championship); Jim Thorpe (2003 Long Island Classic); and Craig Stadler (2005 Blue Angels Classic).

Playing in his only tournament this year, Lee Trevino carded a respectable 1-under 70. And making his Champions Tour debut, Ian Baker-Finch, whose "regular" job is a golf commentator for CBS Sports, had a 3-over 74.
