Peoples Fires 62, Takes Lead in 3M Championship


David Peoples carded a 10-under 62 to take the lead in the 3M Championship. The $1.75 million, 54-hole Champions Tour event began Friday at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn.

The 52-year-old Peoples, who's played nine events this year but had only one top-25 finish, earning $52,723 so far, was torrid Saturday, posting 10 birdies - including nine in 11 holes - to reach 14-under 130, three shots ahead of Argentina's Eduardo Romero (65). Peoples will be seeking his first Champions Tour victory on Sunday.

Both Joe Daley and Olin Browne carded 5-under 67s to share fourth at 9-under 135. Three of the four first-round co-leaders - Chien Soon Lu, Steve Pate and Peter Senior -shot 71s to slip into a tie for sixth at 136 with Lance Ten Broeck (69), Tom Kite (65), Bernhard Langer (69) and Mark McNulty (70).

The fourth 18-hole leader, Gil Morgan, fell into a tie for 16th at 138 following a 73. On Friday, the 65-year-old Morgan shot his age on the Champions Tour for the second time in his career. Morgan has won 25 titles on the over-50 circuit, with his last victory coming in 2007 at Pebble Beach.

Defending champion Jay Haas posted his second straight 71 and is now tied for 41st at 142.
