Pavin & Senior On Top of Allianz Championship

Corey Pavin and Peter Senior are tied for the lead in the Champions Tour's Allianz Championship. The 54-hole, $1.8 million tournament began Friday at Broken Sound Golf Club in Boca Raton, Fla.

Pavin, who opened with an 8-under 64, shot a 70 Saturday. Senior, a native of Australia, has posted rounds of 66 and 68. The two are tied at 10-under 134. Both players are seeking their first win on the over-50 circuit.

Senior had his chance last year, holding a one-shot lead heading into the final round, but he closed with a 77. On Sunday, the 52-year-old promises to forget about what happened in 2011 and focus on the task at hand. "I won't even think about last year," he said.

"I'm not frustrated. I was really happy with my year last year. I gave myself a lot of opportunities. The most satisfying thing is I played very consistent last year. My only goal this year is to win. It would be bloody nice to get it out (of the way) real early."

Pavin noted that the six-shot difference between his two rounds is because of a weather change Saturday. "I'm happy with the way I played. It was tough out there today," he said. "The wind is hard, especially on the greens. The greens are quick, and it was kind of hard to judge the break of the putt because the wind was affecting it a little bit."

Two players - Mark Calcavecchia and Bernhard Langer - are tied for third a stroke back at 135. Calcavecchia carded a 68 while the German Hall of Fame member had a 69.

Sharing fifth at 137 are J.L. Lewis (67), Michael Allen (67) and Peter Jacobsen, who carded the low round of the day, a seven-birdie, no-bogey 65. The Allianz Championship is the Oregon native's first round since he had bone spurs removed from his lower back last November.

Jacobsen's feeling good. "It's incredible the medical technology and breakthroughs that allow guys like us to keep playing and living our dreams out there. I'm 58 years old, we're still doing this. That's breaking the bank. I'm still swearing the Batman costume I wore at Halloween," he joked.

Defending champion Tom Lehman has posted rounds of 71 and 72 and is well back in the field. The Minnesotan shares 35th place at 1-under 143.
