Overton Takes Over Lead in Greenbrier Classic
The scores continued to plummet in the second round of the inaugural Greenbrier Classic. After opening with a 6-under 64, Jeff Overton followed up with an 8-under 62 to take the lead at 14-under 126 in the $6 million PGA Tour event.
Overton carded eight birdies in his round, the lowest of the day. Over Thursday and Friday, the 27-year-old from Indiana has amassed 15 birdies and only one bogey on the historic par-70 Old White Course at Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia.
Overton, who ranks 10th on the Tour's money list at just over $2.4 million this year without a victory - though with two runner-up finishes, has a four-stroke lead over Boo Weekley, who tied Tom Gillis and Chris Stroud for the second-lowest round Friday, a 7-under 63.
First-round co-leaders Erik Compton and Matt Every didn't fare quite so well on the second day. Compton shot a 2-under 68 and is tied with Jimmy Walker (64) for third at 9-under 131. Every carded a 2-over 72 and fell down the leaderboard into a tie for 27th at 5-under 135.
Australia's Aaron Baddeley (65), Briny Baird (65), Chris Stroud (63) and Charles Howell III (67) are six shots behind Overton in a tie for fifth at 8-under 132.
Weekley finally feels healthy after a overcoming a shoulder injury. "I tore a labrum in the left back side of my shoulder blade," said the Florida native. "It's been kind of aggravated like a thorn in me, you know. Just feel like you can't take it back some days, and some days don't feel like I can come through the ball.
"I've been working out and trying to get it all stretched back out and get it worked in there where I feel like I can actually swing the club and not have the hesitation at it."
