Overton Off to Good Start in PGA Tour's Season Opener

Jeff Overton fired a 7-under 64 to take the 18-hole lead in the Frys.com Open. The $5 million event, the season opener on the 2013-14 PGA Tour season, began Thursday at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif.

After opening with seven straight pars, the 30-year-old Indianan got untracked the rest of the way, carding five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth for a one-shot lead over Brian Harman and two over Kyle Stanley.

"It really helps if you can get off to a good start," said Overton, who sank three birdie putts from over 25 feet and a 20-footer for his eagle. "It would be great if we can continue this thing and keep it rolling."

In 2013, the PGA Tour season is starting in October instead of January for the first time in history.

The official season ends next September at the Tour Championship, although there will be a lengthy break between the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne in late November this year and the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in early January. Previous season openers took place at the Tournament of Champions in Kapalua.
