Oregon’s Premier Destination – Sunriver Resort
One of the Northwest’s premier vacation destinations for over three decades, Sunriver Resort in Central Oregon continues to attract visitors from around the world. Boasting three championship-caliber courses – Meadows, Woodlands and Crosswater – Sunriver also features miles of biking and hiking trails, swimming pools, tennis courts, and other fun facilities in this recreational mecca.
The 3,368-acre resort contains 3,200 homes, both of the permanent and vacation variety. Within 40 miles of Sunriver are 300 natural lakes. Also nearby is Mt. Bachelor, one of the nation’s premier skiing areas, and miles of horseback riding trails. The meandering Deschutes River is popular with river rafters and trout anglers.
The golf courses at Sunriver have long been popular with visitors. The original Meadows 18 recently underwent a multi-million-dollar remodel courtesy of architect John Fought. Seven Meadows’ holes border the slender Sun River. During his redesign Fought fashioned bunkers that pay tribute to the great American courses built in the 1920s and ‘30s. For a Meadows tee time, call 541/593-3750.
Woodlands, designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., consistently ranks among the top-25 resort courses in the U.S. The 6,898-yard layout boasts a 72.6 rating and a 132 slope from the championship tees. Dense forests of Ponderosa and lodge pole pines, lava outcroppings and an abundance of water hazards place a premium on shot accuracy at this appropriately named course. To book a Woodlands tee time, call 541/593-3703.
The highly acclaimed Crosswater has been honored by Golf Digest as one of “America’s 100 Greatest Courses.” Designed by Robert Cupp and John Fought, the layout occupies a 600-acre reserve woven through by both the Deschutes and Little Deschutes rivers. These rivers enter play regularly, off tees, alongside fairways, and near greens. The “heathland-style” Crosswater, at 7,657 yards, is the Northwest’s longest course. It’s also the toughest, earning a 76.9 rating and 150 slope from the tips. Open for members and resort guests, tee times can be arranged at Crosswater by calling 541/593-6196.
