Old Hickory Golf Reserve Gets New Course

The Presidentís Reserve Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tennessee opened for play in spring 2000. The 300-acre layout skirts the Cumberland River and adjoins its sister course, the Gary Roger Baird-designed Generalís Retreat at the Hermitage Golf Course.

Designed by Denis Griffith, Presidentís Reserve occupies 300 acres. The site involves 44 acres of wetlands and 13 acres of ďconservation land.Ē Better golfers had better bring their ďAĒ games as the track extends 7,153 yards from the tips. Six tees, however, make the course adaptable for all skill levels; from the forward tees the course measures 5,138 yards.

Many have compared Presidentís Reserve to a course more frequently found along the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia. Griffith has the design skills to adapt a golf course to all types of terrain. Among his most credits are two Georgia venues, Chateau Elan Golf Club and Chestatee Golf Club. In 1999 Chestatee was lauded by one golf publication as Georgiaís best daily-fee course.

The public Presidentís Reserve has many signature features, including a circa-1860 carriage next to the 10th tee. In addition, old wagons around the course adorn restored barns on the property. The facilityís unique tee markers are birdhouses.

The original Hermitage clubhouse was reconstructed and is now shared by Presidentís Reserve. The facility offers a restaurant as well as an indoor-outdoor banquet facility capable of holding upwards of 360 people. Tee times at the Hermitage can be reserved by calling 615/847-4001.
