Nielsen Wins on Champions Tour
Lonnie Nielsen finally earned a victory on one of golf's big tours. The 54-year-old didn't win in five years on the PGA Tour and had made 91 starts on the Champions Tour without a victory.
But Nielsen closed with a two-under-par 69 on Sunday for a two-stroke victory over Loren Roberts in the Commerce Bank Championship in East Meadow, N.Y. He entered the final-round at the 7,021-yard Red Course at Eisenhower Park with a three-stroke lead and was never threatened.
Nielsen won 32 titles on smaller tours, including the New York State Open in 1985 and '89. He came into the tournament with one top-10 finish in 2007 and was 45th on the money list with $187,921. His win in the Commerce Bank Championship more than doubled that amount, taking home the winner's share of $225,000.
