Nicklaus Signature Track Coming to the Bronx


In April 2001, construction of a golf course at Ferry Point Park, a former landfill in the Bronx borough of New York City, remained on hold as environmental groups and residents of a nearby housing project have sued to stop the work. The developer, Ferry Point Partners, want to use 222 acres of the 418-acre property to build the course as well as restaurants, a waterfront promenade, ball fields and a playground.

Under terms of the deal, Ferry Point Partners will develop the site and manage the golf course and restaurants for 35 years, all of which will be open to the public. The developer began work on the project last summer, clearing the land and bringing in fill. The course is supported by the local community board and city officials. The total cost of the project – including a par-72 Jack Nicklaus signature track and the other facilities – is projected to be $22.4 million.

The opposition groups have charged that the city pushed ahead with the project without fully evaluating potential health and environmental threats. They claim an environmental assessment conducted by a consultant hired by Ferry Point Partners was inadequate, and that a more thorough environmental impact statement should be required for a “brownfields” redevelopment project like this.

When the project was announced last year, the developer had hoped to have an operational golf course in fall 2001. But with the litigation unresolved, the opening date has been moved back at least a year.
