New Club Coming to Lenexa

In mid-May 2002, the Lenexa Planning Commission unanimously approved a concept plan for a 27-hole golf course near the southwest corner of 87th Street Parkway and Renner Boulevard. The project, called the Golf Club of Kansas, will occupy 337 acres of currently vacant land. Besides three nine-hole sides, the facility will include a driving range, a full-service clubhouse and a three-hole practice course.

City officials as well as neighboring landowners are supportive of the golf project. Officials feel the course will provide a synergy with the city’s $500 million City Center project, which would be located directly east of the golf course. Rod Hoffman, vice chairman of the planning commission, told the Shawnee/Lenexa Sun that he believed the Golf Club of Kansas is a “four-star” project. Neighbors who addressed the commission during a public hearing on the rezoning request also expressed support of the club.

The semiprivate course will be designed by Tom Jackson, a South Carolinian who has designed more than 110 courses in the eastern U.S. The facility will be managed by GCK Management, Inc. The firm’s president is Tom Kelly, who, for the past three years, has served as the general manager and director of golf at Shadow Glen Golf Club in Olathe.

If final permits are approved as expected, work will begin on the project in August 2002. The tentative opening date is spring ’04.
