Mohegan Sun CC Being Redesigned
Eleven months after the first dozer turned over dirt at Mohegan Sun Country Club in Baltic, Conn., the redesign overseen by golf course architect Robert McNeil is beginning to take shape.
"When I first met with the club and the project manager Ron Winarick of Forewinds Hospitality, we were trying to solve a water resource problem," said McNeil. "The solution included the construction of a new irrigation pond and 2 holding ponds which were designed to become integral parts of the playing experience."
Midway through the project Mr. Winarick was stricken with cancer and battled until his recent passing. "Ron and I had a vision to bring a bold new look to the golf course, enhance the strategy and eliminate the weaker holes on the course," added McNeil.
Ron's spirit and vision now drive the project as it nears completion.
NMP Golf Construction has worked through a challenging spring to bring this vision to life. The project began in August of 2010 and is scheduled for completion in the next few months.
Superintendent Anthony Grosso has taken on the task of growing in the many new areas of the golf course and has also taken charge of reseeding all of the existing greens (that were not rebuilt) with T1/Alpha Bentgrass.
