McIlroy Visits PGA Headquarters to Pick Up 2012 Hardware

Rory McIlroy joined PGA of America leaders and staff at their headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on Monday to accept both the 2012 Vardon Trophy and the PGA Player of the Year Award. The 23-year-old also fielded questions about his success in 2012.

"It was a huge honor to win both of these awards in 2012 and it really showed what a great year I had," said the No. 1-ranked player in the world. "Hopefully I'm able to replicate that a few more times in my career."

The two-time major champion cruised to his first PGA of America Player of the Year Award, compiling 100 points and finishing more than 30 points ahead of second-place finisher Tiger Woods (66 points). The PGA Player of the Year award is presented to the top touring professional based on a point system for tournament wins, official money standing, and scoring average.

McIlroy also claimed the Vardon Trophy, posting a 68.87 scoring average to beat Jim Furyk (69.30) by nearly a half-stroke. The Vardon Trophy is computed based upon adjusted season scoring average.

McIlroy was a member of the 2012 European Ryder Cup team who helped lead them to a stunning comeback victory at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club. He talked about the passion he has for the team competition.

"The Ryder Cup is a truly great event, and so special that you get to compete in it as a team, not just as an individual," said McIlroy.

"I am looking forward to the Ryder Cup in 2014, especially after last year and Europe coming back to win the way they did," he added. "I think it'll add that little extra to the next Ryder Cup, especially with Tom Watson coming back and being the U.S. captain."

This was the second year in a row that the world's No. 1-ranked player has visited PGA Headquarters. Luke Donald, who was top-ranked golfer in the world in early 2012, picked up the 2011 PGA of America Player of the Year Award and Vardon Trophy.
