Magazine Names Sagebrush Best New Course in Canada
ScoreGolf Magazine's panel of golf course raters has named Sagebrush Golf and Sporting Club in Nicola Valley, B.C., as the Best New Course in Canada for 2009.
"The ScoreGolf panel was clearly very impressed as it voted overwhelmingly in favor of Sagebrush as best new course," said editor Bob Weeks. "It's a great honor for what has been a labor of love for Richard Zokol."
"This is a tremendous honor for our entire team at Sagebrush," added Zokol, chairman and co-designer of Sagebrush Golf and Sporting Club. "ScoreGolf is the leading golf publication in the country, and to receive this recognition from such a prestigious magazine and respected panel of experts is very gratifying. This award is a tribute to co-founder Terry Donald, my co-designers Rod Whitman and Armen Suny, and everyone else who has worked so hard to make this dream a reality."
Overlooking Nicola Lake just outside of Merritt in south-central British Columbia, a three-hour drive from Vancouver, Sagebrush incorporates minimalist design philosophies and state-of-the-art agronomy, recalling the links courses of the British Isles in a spectacular North American setting.
"We knew from Day 1 that ours was a different approach, but one that we strongly believed in," said Donald. "We have enjoyed tremendously positive responses from the golfers who have experienced Sagebrush this season, and to have the ScoreGolf panel recognize our effort and our vision is very satisfying."
About Sagebrush Golf and Sporting Club
Set in the rustic Nicola Valley, the private Sagebrush offers vistas of Nicola Lake and the rolling ranch land. The wide, sweeping fairways (where Nos. 11 and 14 pass each other, they span 150 yards); rugged fescue-topped bunkers; massive greens (up to 22,000 square feet in size); multiple tee boxes that stretch the course from 4,934 yards to 7,372 yards (but no blocks, as the winner of the previous hole chooses the tee off spot); and no posted par (holes are rated against a Standard Scratch Score) are some of the track's unique features.
