Leatherstocking & Otesaga Hotel

Designed by seminal golf architect Devereux Emmet and opened in 1909, Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown, N.Y., is a challenging, 18-hole, layout located next to the Otesaga Hotel. Thanks to Leatherstocking’s quality, the Otesaga was voted one of the 50 top U.S. golf resorts by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, in recognition of the course’s excellent design and level of difficulty, as well as its fine accommodations and dining.

In Zagat’s survey, Leatherstocking received the second highest overall rating for public courses in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and GolfWeek named Leatherstocking one of the ten best public courses in the state.

In addition to its challenge, Leatherstocking has been hailed for its commitment to high environmental standards and wildlife preservation. Audubon International officially designated Leatherstocking a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary,” under its Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), a program supported by the United States Golf Association.

Under the direction of head professional Dan Spooner, the resort also offers first-rate instruction and facilities at the Leatherstocking Golf School. Two- and four-day schools or individual lessons are available with acclaimed instructor Ron Philo, Sr. The charge for a two-day school is $495, a four-day school is $795, and the hourly charge for an individual lesson is $125.

The resort and golf course are open April 16 through November, with the golf schools offered May through September. Golf schools are open to the public as well as guests of The Otesaga.

A recipient of the Northeast PGA section’s “Teacher of the Year” award, Philo has a daughter, Laura Philo Diaz, who’s a top player on the LPGA Tour. Spooner, a former “Player of the Year” in the Northeast New York PGA, also gives lessons.

Philo's program is based on the premise that students should focus primarily on gathering information during their lesson. "I am more concerned about the student's future than how well they play during the lesson," Philo says. "I want each player to come away with a better ability to apply the information provided, allowing their game to grow to whatever level they desire."

After receiving instruction, students can practice on an 11-acre driving range and then play the demanding Leatherstocking Golf Course. Sweeping along the western shore of Lake Otsego, the course’s well-bunkered greens and numerous water hazards present a formidable challenge for players of all abilities. With elevated fairways providing views of the lake, the course also ranks among the most scenic in the Northeast. The18th hole may be the most exciting test. The 505-yard, par 5 begins with an “island” tee box in Lake Otsego, then hole left around the lake toward a green fronting The Otesaga’s veranda.
