Langer Gets 16th Champions Tour Title
Bernhard Langer fired a 9-under 63 to eke out a two-shot victory in the SAS Championship. The 54-hole, $2.1 million Champions Tour event started Friday at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C.
The 55-year-old German overcame a four-shot deficit entering Sunday's final round thanks to five birdies on the front nine and four more on the back. He finished at 13-under 203, two strokes clear of Jay Don Blake (68) and three in front of Mark Wiebe (68).
The win, worth $315,000, was Langer's 16th on the over-50 circuit. He also has 42 titles on the European Tour and three - including two Masters - on the PGA Tour.
The SAS win moved Langer past Tom Lehman to No. 1 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings with 2,208 points. Lehman, who didn't play this week, now trails Langer by 69 points.
Tied for fourth at 207 were Tommy Armour III (66) and second-round co-leader Fred Funk (71). Sharing sixth at 208 were defending champion Kenny Perry (69), Andrew Magee (71), Larry Nelson (70) and the other 36-hole co-leader, Steve Pate, who shot a 72.
