Kentucky’s Yatesville Lake State Park Course Opens
The long-awaited and highly anticipated Eagle Ridge Golf Course at Yatesville Lake State Park near Louisa, Ky., opened for play on September 19th. The Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates design is the latest Kentucky State Parks Golf Trail debut and is certainly the course with the most spectacular views.
The mountainous site in the eastern part of the state features a number of holes overlooking Yatesville Lake and surrounding woodlands. The combination of a solid, strategic golf course and inspiring scenery will prove attractive to golfers. The daily-fee facility lies 10 miles off US Route 23 in Lawrence County. It’s an easy 45-minute drive on mostly four-lane highways from both Ashland, Ky., and Huntington, W.V.
Steve Forrest, principal from Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates said of the Yatesville project, "The site was one of the most challenging pieces of property on which we have ever worked because of the severity of the topography. We were scratching our heads trying to come up with a playable 18-hole routing in the early planning stages. The only suitable land was generally on the ridgetops and sooner or later we ran into dead-ends up there.
“There were two key holes, No. 4 and No. 13,” continued Forrest, “that ultimately proved to be the vital links in making the entire layout work. Although the site was difficult, the rewards came in the form of very dramatic and unique golf holes that will provide a scenic and challenging golf experience for visitors and residents of the region alike."
A ribbon cutting-opening day event will be held September 24th. Kentucky’s governor along with other state and local dignitaries, representatives from the various project consultants and local media will get to experience first-hand the new design.
Shawn Smith, project manager with Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates, says of the course, “Some of the holes at Eagle Ridge provide spectacular views, but holes like Nos. 4 and 13 are simply stunning. Hole 4 is a par-5 with an elevation drop of nearly 170 feet from the landing area to the green, and No. 13 is a drivable par-4 that drops 200 feet from tee to green. They alone are worth the price of admission."
The par-71 course features five sets of tees ranging from 4,655 to 6,630 yards. More information about the new Eagle Ridge Golf Course at Yatesville Lake State Park can be found at www.kystateparks.com or by calling the pro shop at 606/673-1492.
