Is Tiger's Tournament Moving to Philadelphia?
Members of Aronimink Golf Club in suburban Philadelphia will vote October 15 on whether to accept a proposal to host Tiger Woods' AT&T National tournament in 2010 and 2011. The move is necessary as the current site, Congressional Country Club, will be undergoing a two-year renovation in preparation for its hosting the 2011 U.S. Open.
The AT&T National will take place at Congressional in July 1-5, 2009, with the host, now recuperating from knee surgery, expected to play. It will return to Congressional in 2012, so an interim site must be found.
Tournament staff first met last year with officials of Aronimink, located in Newtown Square, Delaware County, and then visited the Donald Ross-designed course. A tentative agreement was later reached to move the event to the highly-rated course for 2010 and 2011, but only if members approve it.
This Wednesday the members will listen to a proposal from officials with the Tiger Woods Foundation, the event's beneficiary. It's unknown if Woods will be in attendance. They will then vote by mail with a simple majority needed for approval. The results are expected to be released in early November.
Aronimink has hosted two majors - the 1962 PGA Championship won by Gary Player, and the 2003 U.S. Senior Open won by John Jacobs. The club also held the 1977 U.S. Amateur and 1997 U.S. Junior Amateur.
The par-70 layout can be stretched 7,152 yards from the tips, but insiders say that Tom Fazio or a member of his staff will determine how much longer the layout can be stretched out.
Members at Congressional voted last week to bring the AT&T National back for three years beginning in 2012, with an additional three-year option starting in 2015.
The tournament, originated in 2007, raises funds for Woods' foundation and honors the men and women of the U.S. armed forces. Its first two champions were K.J. Choi in 2007 and Anthony Kim this year.
