Hollywood GC in New Jersey to Host 2014 USGA Senior Women's Amateur
The United States Golf Association has announced that Hollywood Golf Club, in Deal, N.J., will be the host of the 2014 USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship. This will be the second USGA championship held at Hollywood Golf Club. The dates of the championship are September 13-18.
"The USGA is pleased to bring the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship to such a wonderful golf course," said Teresa Belmont, Director of the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship. "Hollywood Golf Club is a classic gem and a course the players will truly enjoy. It will provide a great test."
Hollywood Golf Club, a member-owned club in New Jersey's Monmouth County, was redesigned by Walter J. Travis in 1917 and restored by Rees Jones in 1998. Considered one of the state's top courses, Hollywood has fast, undulating bentgrass greens and well-bunkered fairways. Jones' restoration brought wind back into play, a feature of Travis' design, and allowed the native grasses to flourish, creating a dramatic look.
Approximately 50 miles from New York City and Philadelphia, Hollywood Golf Club hosted the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1921, when Marion Hollins defeated Alexa Stirling, 5 and 4, in the championship's first 36-hole final. Hollins ended Stirling's run of three consecutive U.S. Women's Amateur Championships, and Hollins went on to become the captain of the 1932 USA Curtis Cup Team.
"Hollywood Golf Club is honored to continue our long history of hosting USGA and regional golf association events and is thrilled to have been chosen to host the 2014 USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship," said Paul D. Drobbin, the club's president.
"We look forward to welcoming the United States Golf Association, the players, guests and spectators. Our members, staff, volunteers and the community are excited to provide an outstanding venue for this national championship."
The club has hosted many notable matches and tournaments, including the 1925 Met Amateur, conducted by the Metropolitan Golf Association, and the 1956, 1986 and 2002 New Jersey State Men's Amateurs. In addition, the club was the site of the 1906 and 1991 Met Open, the 2006 and 2011 New Jersey State Open, the 2007 New Jersey State Women's Amateur and the 2008 Met Men's Senior Open. In 2012, Hollywood G.C. will host the 110th Met Amateur Championship.
The USGA Senior Women's Amateur was first played in 1962. The championship is open to female amateurs age 50 and older with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4. In 2012, the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship will be played at Hershey (Pa.) Country Club from September 8-13. The 2013 championship will be played September 21-26 at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif.
