Group Seeks to Build Course on Kentucky-Ohio Border
An attorney representing a group of developers has asked the Kenton County (Ky.) Fiscal Court for help in paving the way for a road into a site in the county’s southern end for a proposed golf course. Attorney Scott Guenther asked the court to use its power of eminent domain to obtain an easement for a road into a 138-acre site near Covington. The development group, Key West Crossing LLC, needs access to the property before building its 18 holes of golf.
Before the developers can proceed, however, they must build a 930-foot road off Key West Road to a new railroad crossing on Ky. 14. They also want the county to maintain the road. The golf project was originally approved by Kenton County in 1998. But a lawsuit by a property owner that went to the Kentucky Court of Appeals received a ruling that the plan should return to the Kenton County Board of Commissioners because the court had insufficient data on which to make an evaluation. The county later denied the plan because of the road issue.
The road would cost the county from $175,000 to $300,000. In response to the request, county officials are taking a wait-and-see approach. “I am all for building a new golf course,” Commissioner Adam Koenig told the Cincinnati (Ohio) Post, “But I would like to see some definite numbers.”
Guenther said the new road is needed for the project – and perhaps for future projects in the vicinity – to pan out. “We need assistance to do the work, which would eliminate a dangerous crossing and bring many benefits to the area,” the lawyer said. “There are other developments that may locate there, so the road would be very beneficial.”
Judge-Executive Dick Murgatroyd said the county currently does not have any funding for the project. “Right now there is no money,” he told the Post. “So it likely would be a year (when the new county budget is adopted) before anything can happen.”
