Golf Resort Coming to Camden County N.C.

Joe Boyd, the owner of Boyd Homes, has begun pitching the idea of developing a golf resort and a sizable residential subdivision to the Camden County (N.C.) Board of Commissioners and Planning Board. The project involves approximately 1,000 housing units and a 300-acre golf course on a 660-acre tract Boyd owns on McPherson Loop Road.
Boyd has yet to announce a specific timetable, but the project’s first phase involves 50 homes, the 18-hole course, several waterways and a clubhouse for residents. “People want to come to a place with the amenities already there,” Boyd told the Elizabeth City (N.C.) Daily Advance newspaper in April 2004.
The residential portion of the development involves a mix of units, ranging from manors, villas, townhouses, custom homes and “quadra villas.” Boyd said he’d like to mimic the historical features of other Camden residences with his unnamed development.
The golf course would be the first in Camden County, located just southwest of Currituck County and the Virginia border. Currituck County is already home to several golf communities. Camden officials have been generally supportive of the project, and have already approved Boyd Homes’ conceptual design. The company is now finalizing its master plan for submission to county officials for review.
Boyd Homes’ president, David Rutiger, said the company has been looking at Camden County for several years as a potential site for a project of this scope. “[This new community] will allow Camden to grow in a direction that is more attractive than other neighboring counties’ subdivisions, which they may not have planned out,” said Rutiger.
The developer, which will need to build a sewage treatment plant as part for the project to proceed, will be helped by the recent expansion of nearby U.S. Highway 17. “With the widening of U.S. 17, this is something we have to consider” because more people will be moving here, said county commissioner Sam Shaw.
