Gold Rush Golf Resort Making Progress


If all goes well, Sutter Creek, Calif., may be the home of a new golf resort by 2005. Gold Rush Golf Resort is being developed in conjunction with the city of Sutter Creek, a town located about 40 miles southeast of Sacramento, the Claveran Group, and Devcon Construction. The resort would be built on a 833-acre parcel known locally as the Noble Ranch.

The project took a step forward in late-January 2003 when the Sutter Creek Planning Commission approved the Final Mitigated Negative Declaration. The fancy term means that planning officials couldnít find anything wrong with the plan, and it paves the way for the development. But, as usual, there are a few caveats. Among the issues that must be addressed are the impacts on traffic and nearby roadways. The city came up with draft plan that will call for the development team to contribute $1,144 per vacation rental unit to the city for road improvements. The property must also be annexed into Sutter Creek for proper zoning.

The Noble Ranch land is located northwest of the intersection of highways 88 and 104, southwest of Sutter Creek. When itís built, the entrance to Gold Rush Golf Resort will be off Highway 104. The proposal includes an 18-hole golf course, driving range, clubhouse, 300 vacation-ownership units, a 52-room resort hotel, swimming pool and tennis courts.

Thanks to a down payment provided by Pleasanton-based Claveran Group, the city of Sutter Creek bought the property for $3.15 million in late 2001. The city wanted to use the open space for disposal of treated wastewater. Claveran suggested a golf course that would reuse the treated effluent for irrigating turf. Company owner, Troy Claveran, previously helped the town of Brookings, Ore., develop Salmon Run Golf & Wilderness Preserve. Salmon Run is located in southwest Oregon, not far from the famed Bandon Dunes.
