Florida State GA Elects New President
The Florida State Golf Association (FSGA), founded in 1913, held its Annual Meeting in Tampa and elected officers for the next two years. James Applegate, Director of Club Properties for Penn-Florida Companies was elected President.
Applegate is regarded as one of the most knowledgeable and experienced golf course development executives in the United States, having served as President and co-founder of the Gary Player Group where he headed the company's worldwide golf course development. Additionally, Applegate was the Director of Golf Development for H. Wayne Huizenga's Boca Resorts company where, among his responsibilities, he managed development of Huizenga's private club in Palm City, The Floridian
Applegate's professional accomplishments include the development of numerous local golf clubs such as Grande Oaks in Fort Lauderdale and Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club in Boca Raton, which was named by Forbes as the most expensive gated community in the United States. In his current role with Penn-Florida, his responsibilities include management and project oversight of the company's two private golf clubs, the Santa Lucia River Club in Port St. Lucie and Via Mizner Golf & Country Club in Boca Raton.
The election to president of the FSGA marks Applegate's second state association to oversee; from 1976 to 1978 he was president of the Michigan Section of the PGA of America.
The FSGA will conduct nearly 450 days of competition in 2012 for men and women of all ages, junior championships, one-day events, the Florida Junior Tour, the Winter Series and the State Inter-Club Matches. It also conducts the Florida Open and South Florida Senior Open. Recently merged with the Florida State Women's Golf Association the FSGA is the largest state golf association in the country. The FSGA will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2013.
