Five Tied for Lead in Dunhill Links Championship
A quintet of players fired 64s in the opening round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. Over the first three rounds the 72-hole European Tour event rotates between three courses - the Old Course at St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, with Sunday's final round on the Old Course.
Mark Tullo, Alexandre Kaleka, Oliver Wilson, Tom Lewis and Richard McEvoy all went 8-under par Thursday, with Tullo, Kaleka and McEvoy on the Old Course and Wilson and Lewis at Kingsbarns.
Tullo, a 35-year-old from Chile, carded three birdies on the front nine and five more on the back. Kaleka, a 26-year-old Parisian, had an identical scorecard. England's McEvoy had eight birdies, an eagle (on the par-4 ninth) and two bogeys for his 64.
Wilson enjoyed a spotless outing at Kingsbarns with six birdies and an eagle (also on a par-4, the third), while fellow Brit Lewis carded seven birdies, an eagle on the par-5 16th and a bogey for a share of the 18-hole lead.
The low round at Carnoustie was a 65 by Jamie Donaldson, one of five players at that number. The others included George Murray and Tommy Fleetwood (Old Course), and Mark Foster and Matthew Baldwin (Kingsbarns).
Justin Thomas carded a 66 on the Old Course to be the low-shooting American after one round. Fellow Yank, Peter Uihlein, a regular on the European Tour who won his first title in May in Portugal, opened with a 71 at Carnoustie.
