Fields Set for PNGA Women’s Amateur & Mid-Amateur Championships


The 101st PNGA Women's Amateur Championship promises a quality field.The best amateur women golfers in the Pacific Northwest will come to the beautifully manicured Quilchena Golf & Country Club in Richmond, B.C., to compete in one of North America's oldest tournaments. Eligible contestants must carry a 12.4 handicap index.

The inaugural Women's Mid-Amateur, also held at Quilchena, has attracted some of the best players in the region. In order to qualify for the Mid-Amateur, players must have a 16.4 handicap index/factor and be 25 years of age or older. Both events tee off on July 8.

In all, 52 golfers will compete in the two championships. Twenty-one will compete in the Women's Amateur Championship, with 31 in the Mid-Am. Golfers likely to have a strong showing in the Women's Amateur are Sarah Bassett of Manito G&CC, Spokane, Wash. who will be attending the University of Notre Dame on a golf scholarship, and Kailin Downs of Bend G&CC in Oregon, the reigning Women's Western Golf Association Junior champion and one of the top players at the University of New Mexico.

The Mid-Amateur includes Marsha Fisher of Willamette Valley CC, Ore., a seven-time Oregon Women's Amateur champion and the winner of the 2002 Oregon Women's Mid-Am. Joan Edwards-Powell of Columbia Edgewater CC in Portland is a multiple champion and the 2000 Pacific Northwest Senior Women's Player of the Year.

The Women's Amateur consists of 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying to determine the 16 contestants who advance to match play. All matches are single-elimination and contested over 18 holes, with the exception of the 36-hole championship final match.

The Mid-Amateur consists of 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine the flights for match play. Sixteen players will advance to the championship flight; all other contestants will be placed in eight flights by their 36-hole qualifying scores.
