Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club Gets Upgrades
Raymond Floyd has completed an extensive remodel of Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club's two 18-hole courses. The $30 million project involved upgrades to the Miller and Soffer layouts.
"I believe in building golf courses that are aesthetically pleasing, conform perfectly with the goals of ownership and provide a challenging and fair test to golfers of all skills and handicaps," said Floyd. "My standard for a truly great course is to ask myself whether it can stand the test of time. I'm convinced that these two courses will be enjoyed for many years to come."
The remodel involved enhancements to the two layouts originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Former, flat wide-open fairways have been transformed into contoured, doglegging fairways lined by new water features. The redesign involved bringing in over 700,000 cubic meters of subsoil to create more pronounced elevations than are often seen in South Florida.
Each course has its own distinct character and sets of demanding greens. The Soffer Course was designed as a par-71 that now stretches 7,047 yards, where it receives a 74.9/149 course and slope rating. The friendlier par-70 Miller course measures 6,417 yards. The Soffer course's island green at the 18th hole now features a 64-foot waterfall - the largest in Florida.
An Audubon-sanctioned bird refuge resides at the resort and is often viewed by golfers. During the renovation a separate "Flamingo Island" was built within Lake Julius - the largest and deepest body of water at the resort named after Golf Hall of Famer and former golf director Julius Boros.
In addition to the course upgrades, the resort also received $100 million in improvements to its adjoining facilities. The Mediterranean-style resort contains 392 guest rooms and suites, the Willow Stream Spa, various dining options, tennis, kids programs and the Ocean Club.
