Els Romps to Victory in WGC-CA Championship

Proving there's life after 40, Ernie Els closed with a 6-under 66 to overwhelm an elite field and win the WGC-CA Championship by four strokes. The popular South African known as the "Big Easy" finished at 18-under 270 at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral in Miami.

The victory was the first for Els since the 2008 Honda Classic and his 17th overall on the PGA Tour. The 40-year-old outshined fellow South African and third-round co-leader Charl Schwartzel (70), who finished alone in second at 274. The victory was worth $1.4 million.

Els' scorecard was immaculate, with four birdies on the front nine - including a momentum-building three on his first four holes - for an outgoing 4-under 32, and two more on the back for a 2-under 34. The 6'3" native of Johannesburg had nary a bogey on Sunday and won going away.

American Matt Kuchar (68), Germany's Martin Kaymer (69) and Ireland's Padraig Harrington (72) finished tied for third at 277.

Alistair Presnell tied Ian Poulter with the low round of the day, an 8-under 64. The Australian ended up in a tie for sixth at 278 with Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell (66), England's Paul Casey (69), Spain's Alvara Quiros (68), and American Bill Haas (71).

Defending champion Phil Mickelson had his best round in the $8.5 million World Golf Championships' event, firing a 68 to finish in a tie for 14th with fellow American Steve Stricker (68) and Italy's Francesco Molinari (68) at 8-under 280.
