Dye Working on First Project in New York |
|
Pete Dye is working on his first-ever golf project in New York State. Pound Ridge Golf Club is slated to open in spring 2008. Situated in affluent Westchester County, the course enjoys such neighbors as Winged Foot, Westchester Country Club and Stanwich.
According to Dye, the 7,154-yard Pound Ridge will be one of his best course designs. The layout is being carved out of 172 acres of rocky cliffs, streams and wooded hills. Portions of the layout weave through a hardwood forest, while other areas cross meadows. Fourteen thousand feet of rock walls surround the course and its trees, wetlands and water hazards. The unique rock outcroppings will serve as a visual feature of the design. The course, which will boast five sets of tees, will be augmented by a full-service clubhouse and a large practice area.
Pete Dye and his collaborator-son Perry, a noted golf architect in his own right, are excited with Pound Ridge's progress, the flow of the holes and the exquisite vistas that have been revealed. In a recent visit to the property, the senior Dye was enthusiastic, commenting: "The ambience of Pound Ridge is very unusual. The rocks here actually have become an asset, and you could not afford to do what we're doing here today if we had to go buy the rock. The things that have made it hard to build will make it beautiful."
Perry Dye offered: "There will be a lot of different shot-making opportunities on all 18 holes." Both architects agree that the project will have "the variety of holes that golfers enjoy."
