Development Underway On Large-Scale Texas Golf Resort

Development of an 1,800-acre resort community on Mustang Island in Texas is now underway. The island is a popular tourist destination surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and Corpus Christi Bay.
The project’s backers recently hired KemperSports to oversee development and operations of the new Newport Golf Club. The resort’s first 18-hole layout, an Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course, is part of the first phase of construction within the budding coastal community called Newport Beach and Golf.
Upon completion, the resort community, the brainchild of partners Craig Millard and Charles Castor of Texas Gulf & Harbor Ltd., will bring residential villages, multiple hotels, a marina, tennis and beach clubs, two golf courses and additional amenities to Mustang Island, located on the south end of Port Aransas.
“We have engaged nationally acclaimed companies to help us successfully steer this development, and KemperSports certainly falls into that category when it comes to golf development and management,” said Millard. “Together, we plan to make Newport a golfing community through a distinctive course design that preserves the island’s identity and bolsters its allure.”
The Port Aransas City Council approved the planned development in 2002, and the city worked closely with Millard and Castor during its formation. Newport Golf Club is slated to open in the summer of 2008. The project is the second in Texas taken on recently by KemperSports. The company, the development consultant of Butterfield Trail Golf Course, will assume management of facility operations when that course in El Paso opens later this year.
