David McLay Kidd Designs New Course in Bend, Oregon

In November, construction was continuing on a new golf course in Bend, Ore. Designed by David McLay Kidd, the architect for the original course at the acclaimed Bandon Dunes on Oregon's southern coast, the Club at Tetherow is slated to debut in June 2008.
In late October, the project's developer announced that OB Sports Golf Management will oversee all aspects of the operations for the Club at Tetherow, including golf shop operations, food and beverage, guest services, membership sales and turf care.
Located seven minutes from downtown Bend, the 700-acre Tetherow development occupies high-desert terrain. In addition to the golf course, the project involves 379 single-family lots as well as lodge homes, cabins and townhouses. Other amenities include a clubhouse, the Tetherow Golf Academy, a sports' and recreation center, restaurant, open space for outdoor activities, and the Tetherow Hotel & Spa.
Kidd, whose latest work is designing the seventh layout at St. Andrews, Scotland, called the Castle Course, has crafted a track at Tetherow that features several of his signature characteristics. The course will contain an eclectic mix of holes framed by ragged bunkers, knobs and knolls. It is surrounded by panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains.
The design incorporates elements of the seaside links courses Kidd grew up with in his native Scotland: fescue grasses, deep uneven bunkers, rippling fairways, and run-up areas to the greens. The course will be private, with access also accorded guests at Hotel Tetherow.
"Tetherow will be one of the most exciting golf course openings next year," said Orrin Vincent, CEO and founder of OB Sports Golf Management. "We are honored to be a part of what will become the premier golf resort community in the region. The Club at Tetherow truly is blessed with a spectacular site and a visually striking layout that will put the community on the map in the national golf scene. The design is that of a seaside links course that looks as though it belongs near the waters edge. But the setting is in the mountains - with ponderosa pines, junipers and dramatic views of often snow-capped Cascades."
"We selected OB Sports primarily due to their personalized, hands-on approach," said Don Bauhofer, principal of Arrowood Development and longtime Bend resident. "The expertise, corporate support and national resources they will be providing to Tetherow will play an integral role in our vision to create the premier golf resort community in the country."
